garry's mod ruined my life and it's gonna ruin yours, too
7/5/25
recently i reached 2,000 hours in garry's mod. merely 30% of that
was actual gameplay... most of it was trying to figure out what
in the world is going on underneath the hood of this shitfuck
source engine garbage from a time which i wasn't even alive to
experience.
this blog exists to document my findings - good, bad, weird,
whathaveyou - that took place over the tremendous amount of time
spent in this one singular game alone.
and, let me just say: you are not prepared.
chapter 1: performance is a fuck
it's not happening, pal. don't even try.
once you realize that this game can - and will in fact - lag no
matter how good your hardware is, it's virtually impossible to
unsee.
if i weren't crazy, i'd say that inferior hardware works better,
but for 1. im fucking batshit insane and 2. there's defenitive
proof that that is absolutely not the case. (greets to my homie
who used to play on a laptop that was standing on its last legs)
my conclusive analysis is that it all depends on energies, atmosphere,
environmental conditons, and space waves.
oh, you think im joking?
there was this one day where i managed to achieve an unreal performance
metric (it was literally around 300 fps, which is the
limit for source) and i hadn't changed a single value...
what's crazier is that i was playing with a fairly large amount
of addons, too. nothing was adding up.
it just so happens the next time i boot it up, that sweet succulent
buttery smooth gameplay was a fucking lie.
i still don't know what i did to cause it, or even how
to replicate it. that one day in particular, it felt like being nice to me.
this is on a laptop that i've been using for a good three years now,
which is running arch linux... what???
